Zverev Faces Auger-Aliassime in Season-Ending Championships Showdown
Overview
The occupational hazards of round-robin tennis often result in at this point of the season-ending championships we’re often left confused, searching around for a computing device and trying to work out the complex permutations of qualification. Yet tonight’s match between Zverev and Felix Auger-Aliassime, fortunately, is straightforward. It's a direct elimination: the victor sets up a semi-final battle against Alcaraz at this year-end tournament; the defeated player is eliminated.
Zverev is the predicted winner for this: the elite athlete is the player with greater achievements, has previously won at this tournament on two prior occasions and is ahead in their direct encounters with six victories against three defeats, winning both their past encounters on an enclosed hard court.
Yet … this type of playing field on which Felix has secured most of his championships, he is in great form after his compelling comeback against Ben Shelton on midweek and he defeated the German in the US Championships initial phase in August. Plus, the court pace is quicker in Turin than at Flushing Meadows, which is even more beneficial in AA’s favor.
If the German player is reserved, as he did against Sinner, and Auger-Aliassime takes it to the European player with his effective service game and bold strategy, it could well be the 25-year-old Canadian – the earlier standout who was earlier slated in front of the Spanish and Italian stars to succeed the legendary trio – who obtains the uncertain distinction of competing with the global leader on Saturday.
The match starts: at around 20:30 in the host city, 19:30 Greenwich Mean Time.
