Ultra-Conservative Former Lawmaker J.A. Kast Chosen as Chile Next Leader.
After a definitive final ballot, far-right figure José Antonio Kast has clinched the top job in Chile.
A Clear-Cut Win
After over 99% of polling stations reporting, Kast garnered 58.17% of the votes, overcoming leftist candidate Jeannette Jara, who earned 41.83%.
This signifies Kast's third presidency, having in the past been defeated by the current president, Gabriel Boric, in the 2021 final vote.
Agenda Built On Law and Order and Migration
Recognized for his unwavering socially conservative views and praise for the era of dictator Augusto Pinochet, Kast's electoral bid was primarily focused on promises to combat rising crime and radically reduce migration.
He consistently pointed to migrants, particularly the roughly 330,000 undocumented individuals in Chile, for crime rates. During the campaign, he issued an ultimatum for them to exit before the inauguration or face expulsion.
His policy ideas featured U.S.-style measures such as erecting camps, high walls, perimeter fencing, and increasing the armed forces presence on the northern border.
Part of a Broader Wave
Many analysts see Kast's victory as part of a wider conservative wave in Latin America, similar to this year's political outcomes in countries like Ecuador, Bolivia, and Argentina.
Nevertheless, other analysts further frame it as a extension of the predictable rotation of power between left and right governments since Chile's establishment of democracy in 1990.
Ruling Lacking a Strong Majority
Despite his sweeping electoral victory, Kast is not expected to hold an overall majority in the legislature, not in the lower house nor the Senate, even when various conservative parties are grouped together.
This political situation may complicate his agenda, such as a pledge to cut public spending by $6 billion within 18 months—a plan for which he has not offered concrete steps.
"There are several aspects about what a Kast presidency will be that we don't know because he has not detailed how he will achieve them," said a political science professor.
The professor added, "In terms of the economy, it is highly probable we will see adjustment measures common for the right-wing. However the area with far less ambiguity is on public safety, because that has been his central theme during the campaign."
