The acclaimed crime series AC-12 will make a comeback for its 7th season, announced by the BBC.

An upcoming six-part season created by the show's creator will begin filming in Belfast in the coming months, according to the network.

The actress expressed excitement about the comeback, stating she was "thrilled" about the show's renewal. Adrian Dunbar added, "What a joy it is to know that the Three Amigos will be reuniting together next year."

The last series concluded in 2021 with a final episode that drew in more than 17 million viewers. Speculation about a new season have been widespread for some time, but official word only arrived this week.

Fresh Obstacles for AC-12

Series seven will open with the anti-corruption unit no longer existing and rebranded as the Inspectorate of Police Standards, according to production details.

Steve Arnott, Kate Fleming, and Adrian Dunbar's part remain working to combat misconduct within the law enforcement.

The team's mission "has never been more difficult", and under these circumstances, the trio are assigned their "most sensitive case to date."

Fresh Face and Complex Case

An additional officer, Det Insp Dominic Gough, portrayed as a charismatic officer known for takedowns of organized crime, is accused of misusing his authority to become a sexual predator.

Yet, this investigation could be a deliberate distraction from a bigger threat still operating in the shadows, plot details suggested.

In a statement, the creator said: "All cast and crew are deeply thankful to the dedicated viewers."

"It's an honor to have had countless fans watch the developments of the unit over six previous seasons and we are thrilled to be coming back for a new installment."

Mercurio continued: "Corruption in the UK was thought to be over while Line of Duty was not airing, so I've been compelled to use my creativity."

Cast Reactions

Martin Compston described being part of the series as "the role of a career".

"Not only the program's popularity but the colleagues I've collaborated with I now call dear friends."

"I'm excited to pull the waistcoat on again and get the team back together," he said.

The Nottingham-born actress stated: "Obviously I'm very happy the show is back! Can't wait to work with Jed, Martin and Adrian again. The city, we'll be there shortly!"

Adrian Dunbar commented: "As we count down the AC-12 return, how exciting it is to know that the central trio will be back filming next year."

"Delighted with the announcement and looking forward to those unexpected plot developments."

Show History

The drama launched in 2012 and became a highly successful television series of the past ten years, attracting guest stars such as Kelly Macdonald.

The BBC has not yet announced when the upcoming series will hit screens.

The finale of season six drew the extended plot about the search for criminal mastermind known as "H" to a conclusion, and the creative team indicated at the time there were no plans for additional seasons.

However, the network announced on Tuesday that a new season is now being produced.
