Summers announced he would step back from public roles after legislative body disclosed his repeated correspondence with the financier

Former US treasury secretary the Harvard professor is exiting the directorate at the artificial intelligence firm, just a week after a collection of emails between him and notorious criminal the disgraced billionaire became publicly available.

The economist remarked in an announcement that he was "appreciative for the chance to have contributed, excited about the potential of the enterprise, and look forward tracking their advancement".

The prominent academic, who formerly presided over the prestigious university, declared on recently that he would be stepping back from public roles due to his relationship with Jeffrey Epstein.

The recently released communications showed that the official exchanged messages with Epstein until the 24 hours preceding Epstein's 2019 detention for suspected sex trafficking of young people.

In another announcement, the AI firm stated it respected his choice to resign.

"We value his significant contributions and the perspective he brought to the directors," OpenAI commented.

Congressional Action

This announcement follows after the entire Congress of Congress agreed on this week to pass a measure that would mandate the US justice department to disclose its records on the case.

The legislation will afterward head to the desk of President Trump for endorsement. The President has indicated he expects to endorse the legislation, after reversing his view on the subject following objections from his followers.

A collection of Epstein-connected messages disclosed by the House Oversight Committee last week referenced numerous prominent individuals in the billionaire's past associates, without implying any criminal activity by those individuals.

The emails showed that the professor and Epstein often met for meals, with the billionaire often attempting to introduce the official to influential world leaders.

After the correspondence were shared with the wider community, Summers stated he assumed "full responsibility for my poor choice to continue communicating with Jeffrey Epstein".

He added that he desired "to rebuild faith and repair relationships with the individuals most important to me".

Career Background

The professor served in senior posts under Democratic administrations; acting as economic leader under President Clinton, and as head of the White House economic team under Barack Obama.

He presided over Harvard from the early 2000s and remains a faculty member there. When stating his withdrawal from public duties recently on Monday, he indicated he would maintain his teaching commitments.

Additional Consequences

Following Summers' announcement on Monday, the Center for American Progress, a liberal research organization in DC where Summers was a senior fellow, verified that the economist was no longer associated with the institution.

He joined the board of OpenAI, which develops the AI chatbot, in last year - following a unsuccessful effort to remove its top executive Sam Altman.
