Gas Detonation Claims 3 Carabinieri Amid Eviction Operation in Northern Italy
A trio of officers lost their lives and no fewer than 15 people were hurt in what appears to be deliberate blast caused by gas at a country home in the northern part of Italy.
Event Timeline
The blast took place as law enforcement and fire personnel went into the property close to the Verona region to carry out an court-ordered eviction for two brothers and a sister who were older adults.
The three victims who died served in the Italian military police.
Investigation Developments
Two individuals were taken into custody at the location and another man who escaped after the incident was apprehended not long after. The trio have been admitted to medical facility.
The blast could be noticed approximately 5 kilometers away and footage from the area showed the structure reduced to a mass of wreckage.
“This is a time for grieving,” said Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi, who added that efforts had been made to remove the three family members in the past.
Property Situation
The head of the Veneto region, President Zaia, said the farmhouse was subject to an court order due to unpaid amounts accrued by the property owners.
Negotiators had been sent to engage the family members who had locked themselves into the property. When the police arrived shortly after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), officials believe one of the siblings set off the explosion.
“When we entered the property, we faced an utterly insane act,” local police chief Claudio Papagno told the media.
A gas canister had been activated, and the detonation directly hit our officers,” he explained.
Incendiary devices were also discovered at the property, the interior minister stated.
Injuries and Destruction
Injured individuals by the blast comprised 11 other members of the Carabinieri as well as a trio of personnel of the state police and a firefighter.
According to the local prosecutor, the building was in a poor condition and had no electricity.
He believed the detonation had occurred on a floor above the entrance and stated to the press it was a “intentional and planned killing”. Shortly before the incident, he revealed personnel had “noticed a hissing sound, probably the gas cylinders being activated”.
Local Response
“Everyone was aware the circumstances were severe,” neighbors stated to local news, adding that the three had earlier warned to “blow themselves up” rather than leave the house.
“The incident exacted a ‘dreadful, extremely sad and dramatic price’.”
Minister of Defence Minister Crosetto united with other government officials in honoring the trio of personnel who had been killed in the performance of their duties.
