Eurovision Was Traditionally a Lighthearted Spectacle – But It Has Transformed Into a Strategic Method to Sanitize Conflict.

An new acronym surfaced several months after the start of the military campaign against Gaza. Referred to as WCNSF, it means “Injured child with no living relatives”. This designation is found only in Gaza, as stated by doctors including paediatricians. Typically, it is uncommon for medical staff to attend to a young patient who has been bereaved of their entire family. But, there has been absolutely nothing ordinary about the devastating conflict in Gaza, where whole bloodlines have been eradicated and the number of child amputees exceeds that of anywhere else in the world. Nothing ordinary about scores of doctors returning from a sea of ruins with testimonies of children being intentionally shot at.

An Unimaginable Crisis Regardless of a Announced Cessation of Hostilities

Gaza remains hell on earth. Vital medicines and equipment are being blocked those in need, and major human rights organizations contend that atrocities are ongoing. Authorities has denied these accusations, just as it refutes all charges it is implicated in. But while grieving children who lost parents are now freezing in makeshift tent camps, there is a little heartwarming news: apparently nothing is going to stop the Eurovision from pursuing its stated mission of “togetherness and artistic sharing.” Eurovision will continue to extend a prestigious stage for Israel, even though several European countries have now withdrawn in objection. Since this, it seems, is what global togetherness resembles.

The contest, notably prohibited Russia from taking part in 2022 because of the “grave situation in Ukraine”. However, the situation in Gaza is treated differently.

Contradictory Principles

Forget the fact that Israel was criticized for questionable voting tactics last year in what could be seen as an attempt to manipulate Eurovision. Forget the fact that a young child was reportedly killed in Gaza just days ago. Neglect the data that aggression from Israeli settlers and coerced removal in the West Bank have increased dramatically. Overlook the situation that foreign reporters are still blocked from independent reporting in Gaza. None of this, it would seem, should be permitted to obstruct of Eurovision’s self-proclaimed spirit of unity.

The Show Goes On While Ignoring Profound Human Cost

The contest reaches its seventieth anniversary next year – roughly two times the average life expectancy of an individual in Gaza at present. The broadcast will air, but it will likely never recapture the pure, unadulterated fun it was formerly known for. A contest that was originally built on peace has transformed into a blatant mechanism to sanitize military aggression.
