Scorching conditions and raging wildfires have devastated the parched landscape of Western Australia. As temperatures expected to persist soaring above 40C (104F) over the next few days, a severe heatwave warning has been issued across much of the southwestern region.

These conditions come after this month's bushfires in another state, which caused the destruction of homes and fatalities. Intense heat alerts have also been activated for the coming days in areas within SA and New South Wales, as a ridge of high pressure shifts to the east, bringing blazing sunshine to a broad swath of the area.

The combination of tinder-dry vegetation and relentless heat creates a dangerous scenario for firefighters.

In another part of the world, a major city was left in darkness recently after powerful gusts compromised the city’s electrical network, with toppled trees bringing down power lines. Meanwhile, a region famed for its sunny weather and plentiful sunshine has experienced one of its grayest and most overcast weeks on record. A particular form of low cloud, which typically lasts for only a few days, has been remarkably widespread and long-lasting this year, holding temperatures at a key transport hub below 8C for over a week – the most prolonged period in more than three decades. The prolonged fog has been fuelled by unprecedented autumn precipitation that left soils saturated.
